""Obviously players will always be able to take their own insurance to protect their income in the event of a serious injury.


""But it is also important that the game has its own scheme and the players, clubs and NRL are working towards that.""


Smith said the league was also planning to set up a foundation to assist players who suffer catastrophic injuries.


The NRL declared the most recent round of matches was to be named the Rise For Alex round Adidas NMD CS1 Sverige , an initiative which raised McKinnon 1.1 million dollars.


As part of the round, the wheelchair-bound 22-year-old returned to Hunter Stadium in Newcastle for the first time since his injury and led the Knights and Gold Coast Titans on to the field before the start of the game.
